Specialty Virtual Human Models

Expand virtual testing beyond conventional models with greater flexibility across diverse populations, anatomies, postures, and applications.

GHBMC specialty models broaden the scope of virtual human body modeling to address simulation requirements not covered by standard occupant and pedestrian representations. The available models include Aged, Regional, ATD-Analogous, and Chinese GHBMC, each supporting better-informed design decisions through tailored models that reflect specific human characteristics and evaluation objectives.

Aged Models

The Aged models include three derivative models based on the Detailed 50th percentile male occupant model (M50-O) and the Detailed 50th percentile female occupant model F05-O. The models represent target ages of 24, 42, and 70 years and are designed to complement the baseline models. For more details, see publications.

Model Development

  Model morphing

M50 and F05 models were morphed to match anatomical characteristics corresponding to the target ages

  Geometry adjustments

Model geometry was adjusted through element reassignment

  Material modification

Material properties were modified to reflect physiological changes associated with aging

ATD-Analogous Models

ATD-Analogous models are designed for use in crash simulations, including frontal impact tests and regulatory crashworthiness assessments. These models correspond to physical anthropomorphic test devices (ATDs), enabling virtual evaluations that complement established crash-testing methods. For more details, see the referenced publication.

Elemance Simplified Models

Key Capabilities

  Direct comparison

Enable direct comparisons between human body models and ATDs

  Expanded test scenarios

Support evaluation of conditions that physical test devices cannot easily replicate, including low-speed maneuvers and oblique impacts

  Matched simulations

Provide an analogous human response when paired with ATD counterparts in matched simulations

Elemance Simplified Models

Regional Models

Regional models provide focused representations of specific anatomical areas for targeted simulation and analysis. Custom regions are also available for additional modeling needs and can be requested through Elemance Support.

Regions Available

  Head

The isolated head model (M50-H) is available in two versions:

(1) Fully Deformable Skull – Supports evaluation of skull and facial fractures and their associated effects on brain tissue
(2) Rigidized Skull – Supports simulations in which skull deformation is not expected, including helmeted impact scenarios

  Brain

The M50-Brain model enables detailed analysis of brain deformation during real-world impacts without compromising skull integrity. Ideal for helmeted sports and similar scenarios, it provides researchers and product developers with precise insight into brain response.

  Thorax

The Isolated Thorax model enables simulation of chest impacts and assessment of resulting injuries, including rib fractures, to support the development of safer products and protective systems.

  Head and Neck

The Head and Neck model preserves the kinetic chain between the head and torso to capture force and energy transfer during movement and impact. It also supports direct comparison with head/neck dummy rigs, including the Hybrid III Head + Neck, to evaluate neck motion and loading.

Chinese GHBMC

The M50-O Chinese Human Body Model was built to represent a variant of the Chinese population. Using the Chinese national standard for population anthropometry, this model reflects the 50th percentile male of Chinese populations.

Elemance Simplified Models

Key Characteristics

  Flexible model fidelity

Available as both Simplified and Detailed occupant models to accommodate different simulation requirements and levels of anatomical detail

  Anthropometric accuracy

Both models are morphed to Chinese anthropometry based on the national standard (GB/T 10000-2023, Human Dimensions of Chinese Adults), with measurements maintained within ±5% of Chinese 50th percentile male targets and flesh-part densities scaled within physiological ranges to match target mass

  Simulation robustness

Tested in highly automated vehicle (HAV) robustness cases and Human Body Models for Virtual Testing (HBM4VT) boundary conditions to assess performance across established simulation conditions

Reclined Models

As vehicle designs evolve to incorporate a wider range of occupant postures, reclined-position modeling is becoming increasingly important for realistic safety simulation. Request model information.

Key Characteristics

Multiple recline angles

Available at 45-degree and 60-degree seat back angles to represent a range of reclined occupant positions

  Detailed and simplified models

Available as both M50-O (detailed 50th percentile male occupant) and M50-OS (simplified 50th percentile male occupant) to support different simulation requirements and levels of anatomical detail

  Validated positioning

Reclined postures were developed using joint-angle targets from the posture prediction equations in Reed et al (2019), with both models matching target angles within one (1) degree.
